The pies ’n’ pints package holiday culture is still alive and kicking in Tenerife but away from the dense concrete resorts of the southern coast, the largest Canary Island dazzles. With plunging cliffs, black sand beaches, tropical forests and over 200 volcanoes, the island’s geography – including El Teide, Spain’s highest mountain – is jawdroppingly varied.

Still an active volcano, Mount Teide gives the island its unique silhouette and is the Canary Islands’ most popular attraction. Most visitors get to its chilly summit by cable car (eight minutes) rather than by foot (two days) and the views from the top spread dramatically over the rest of the archipelago.

Below, the National Park of Las Cañadas is the desolate, lava-strewn moonscape used to film Planet of the Apes. To the west, are the spectacular cliffs of Los Gigantes; to the north, the glorious hiking country of the Orotava valley. The nearby fishing port of Garachico and the charming town of La Orotava are good bases for exploring the north of the island; their churches, ornate balconies and quiet Moorish patios give a flavour of the island’s important history as a stop on the trade routes between Europe, Africa and the Americas.

For cosmopolitan culture and shopping, head to the capital city of Santa Cruz. The numerous parks and shady Ramblas are the best places for a stroll, while Calle de Castillo is the main commercial hub. Two museums worth checking out are the Museum of Nature and Man, which charts the island’s ecological and cultural heritage, and the Museum of Fine Arts, with works by leading Spanish and Flemish artists.

The city’s nearest beach is Playa de la Teresitas a few miles up the coast, but the brand new seafront lido, the Cesar Manrique Maritime Park, is a popular place for a dip and has plenty of sun terraces. Other projects intended to regenerate Santa Cruz’s waterfront include the Oscar Domínguez Institute of Art and Contemporary Culture and Calatrava’s soaring auditorium, where concerts are staged almost every night; also host to the prestigious Canary Islands Festival of Classical Music.

The mother of all Spanish carnivals takes place over the month of February in Santa Cruz. It is considered to be one of the best in the world after Rio, with parades, music and all-night partying.
